It often starts with an epiphany... “Wait, I’m pretty good at this!” This feeling can even grow into a real skill set; a painter may read volumes on the Renaissance. A pianist may spend a crazy number of hours locked inside a practice room learning Beethoven. An entrepreneur may become a total expert in a new department because it matters to her business.
At some point, this passion grows beyond personal fulfillment, into something else. A new way to solve a problem, a job... a career. And at some point, for many, the creativity.... stops.
The painter only paints, the pianist only plays. For some reason, their creativity becomes fenced in. But it doesn’t have to be this way.
Creativity is far more fundamental than any one subject area. Creativity is more than just a skill, it’s also the soil from which a multitude of skills can grow.
So why not turn the whole thing into a garden?

Think big and work backwards. If you’ve exhausted your creative muscles developing skills, ideas, and products in your area of expertise, you can unleash the same creativity to invent other things. Maybe it’s an extensive marketing campaign. Maybe there’s a creative new way to solve some operational issue.

Who’s to say the painter can’t produce a weekly podcast on art and design which brings in thousands of listeners? Who’s to say the guitar player can’t learn how to build an audience on YouTube? Who’s to say the CEO can’t learn a few things about design thinking and re-design aspects of her business that need work?
The notion that certain skills can’t be expanded upon is what leads to the common phrase, “I’m not creative.” In truth, we all are creative.

1. BUSINESS CAN BE CREATIVE, TOO...
If you’re a songwriter, try thinking about yourself as a songwriting business instead. There are so many ways to grow your business through creative words. You can start a blog on ways to overcome writers block. You can run a social media ad campaign promoting your music. If you can map out a song, chances are you can map out a timeline of personal objectives. This way of thinking can be applied to any profession. If you’re able to do this effectively. your audience will grow, and you may be able to create new revenue streams for your art.
2. DEVELOP A VORACIOUS APPETITE FOR SUPPLEMENTARY SUBJECTS.
Don’t just study French wine, study France. Studying topics which supplement your craft will ensure you never get bored of your pursuits. Buy a new coffee table book, subscribe to a new podcast, and instead of flipping through Instagram while waiting in line for coffee, knock out an article on a topic related to your passion. Put this question on repeat throughout the day: “Could I be making better use of my time right now?”
3. KEEP SEEKING THE THRILL.
Happiness is important, especially in terms of doing what you love. But if you put all your focus into just one creative skill that makes you happy, you may plateau and become bored. Expanding the scope of your creativity keeps things fresh and new. Think back to what you felt when you were at your creative peak.
